STEP 5 RULES

The TLC strives to provide a supportive student environment, both for TLC patrons and for TLC employees.  Because of this, we provide flexible scheduling and always put tutoring duties before other assigned TLC duties.  However, when not tutoring, you will be expected to do other TLC duties before personal items, such as studying for classes.

In addition, business and industry groups have asked the college to teach students how to perform and behave on jobs.  We take this responsibility very seriously.  If you have any questions about this, any staff member will be happy to discuss it with you.
General Guidelines
  • In the TLC, there is a general (information) desk by the door closest to the TLC offices. In the top, right-hand drawer, you will find a folder with your name on it.  Inside each folder are tutoring sheets.  Be sure to fill one out for each person you tutor.

  • At the end of each day, you need to fill out your timesheet. Maintain an accurate time sheet.  Sign it immediately upon receipt.  Also, turn it in on time.  If you fail to do this, payment will be delayed by two weeks.  Your timesheet is in the bottom, right-hand drawer of the information desk.

  • You can pick up your paycheck from the campus operator in the Administration Building.  You will be required to show a picture ID, such as a driver's license.

  • Adhere to your schedule.  Arrive on time and do not stay over (unless cleared to do so Judy Coomes, the TLC Director).  We cannot pay you for overtime.

  • Missed time cannot be made up without the approval of the Director of the TLC.

  • If you cannot make it to work, call a staff member (Judy Coomes, Sherry Lee, Jelaine McCamish, or David Powers) at 686-4532 or 686-4534/5 as soon as possible.  Excessive absenteeism will result in dismissal.

  • The copier in the TLC office is for TLC business purposes only.

  • In the TLC, we allow students to print only ten computer copies per day.  If the student has more than ten copies, we request them to print them in the Technical Building computer lab or the Library computer lab.

When Tutoring
  • Wear your name tag while on duty.  This lets students know they can ask you a question.

  • Always check with staff to see if there is anything you need to know or do before beginning tutoring/work.

  • Greet students as they come into the TLC.  Many first-time TLC patrons need assistance in finding appropriate resources.  Try to make them feel welcome.

  • Do not comment on instructors' methods.  It will get back to the instructor and reflect on the Center.

  • Tutor only classes and subjects that you have been cleared to tutor.  You are not cleared to tutor classes in which you are currently enrolled.  When in doubt, check with Judy Coomes, the TLC Director.

When Not Tutoring
  • Be visible.  When you aren't tutoring, sit at the information desk.

  • When not tutoring, it is your responsibility to answer the phone.

  • When not tutoring, it is your responsibility to help students sign into and out of the TLC sign-in computer.

  • When not tutoring, it is your responsibility to assist with other TLC duties, such as helping students with student e-mail, SkillsTutor, make-up tests, etc.

  • You are allowed to use TLC computers only during slow times in the Center.
    • Slow times do not mean when you are not tutoring.
    • Slow times are when there are no or only one or two students in the Center.
    • You are still expected to help with TLC work.
    • If you are on the computer and a student comes in needing help - even in slow times - you are still expected to help the student. Remember, the TLC staff members have other assigned work they are doing.
    • Therefore, if you do elect to get on a computer during slow times in the Center, you will need to remain alert.
  • If only a few computers are available, please do not get on a computer so that students will know computer resources are available.  (It is also unadvisable for the public to see all on-duty student workers/tutors on computers.)

Please note that the TLC encourages you to bring your homework.  Since tutoring is not appointment based, some days are slower than others.  You may have time to complete homework while on duty.  We look forward to getting to know you!
