Tutor Training

As a current student, you can apply to tutor OCTC students. All tutoring is done within the Teaching and Learning Center located on the upper level of the Campus Center.  To be a peer tutor, you must meet the following qualifications.

PEER TUTOR QUALIFICATIONS

  •  Overall GPA of 2.5

  •  GPA of 3.0 in the area you intend to tutor

  •  Recommendation of instructor

  •  Strong interpersonal communication skills

To apply, call 686-4532, 686-4534, or 686-4535, and speak with our director, Judy Coomes.  You may also come by the Teaching and Learning Center to receive an application. The TLC staff are always looking for qualified tutors and would be happy to speak with you.

BENEFITS OF BECOMING A TUTOR

  • Money -
    You get paid.
  • Empathy Skills -
You become sensitive to the emotional and intellectual needs of others.
  • Role Model -
It's hard to work and go to school. It's hard to have patience and empathy for others when your own life needs your attention.  Students realize this and will become encouraged by your actions.  They will think, "If he/she can persevere, then so can I".
  • Ability to Listen -
Communication is both speaking and listening. One of your hardest jobs will be to listen more and to speak less.  Learning to listen effectively will improve not only your school and work relationships, but also your personal relationships.

  • Patience -
Since this is a tutor's most important characteristic, you will practice this often. Patience will reward you throughout life.
  • Personal Insight -
    You learn more about yourself.
  • Respect -
Being a tutor requires special knowledge and skills.  People will respect you for that, as you learn to respect others for their unique qualities.
  • Social Interaction
Everyone needs to know how to act among other people.  As a tutor, you may be the facilitator, but you'll learn how and when to give and take.  Knowing how to mediate and negotiate are qualities you'll need at work and at play.
  • Resume -
Since being a tutor does require special knowledge and skill, it will look good on your resume.
  • Knowledge -
The more you tutor, the more you learn about your subject area. The very act of communicating the knowledge to your tutees will broaden your own base.
