Guidelines for Make-up Testing

The Teaching and Learning Center works with instructors to provide proctoring for their student/s who missed a class test.  However, the TLC, instructor/s, and student/s all have certain responsibilities.

Instructor's responsibilities:

  1. The instructor must inform students that the TLC requires proof of identity before the staff can allow the student to take the test. The student may provide any type of picture ID, such as a driver's license.

  2. The instructor must write the student's name, subject, teacher's name, date submitted to the Center, and any special instructions, such as "open book."  This necessary information should be recorded on top of each test, not paper-clipped to a stack of tests. Because students come in separately to test, and because one paper-clipped instruction originally meant for many students gets easily lost, this step is vital to insure the test is administered correctly.

  3. The instructor will bring the exam to the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) located in the Learning Resource Center.  At that time, a TLC staff member will sign in the make-up test/s into the TLC Make-up Exam Register.  A staff member will place the test/s into the "IN" folder housed in a file cabinet.

  4. Instructors must pick up the test/s within two weeks of submission.  Teachers will not be called each time a student takes a test, nor will tests be placed in instructors' mailboxes.  If the test has not been taken by the student within two weeks after the teacher turned it in, and the teacher has not called asking that the date be extended, the untaken test will be placed in the "OUT" folder.  (Putting a make-up test off any longer would not be to the advantage of any student.)

Student's responsibilities:

  1. The student is responsible for providing a picture ID to the TLC staff.

  2. The student is responsible for following the teacher's instructions written on the test.

  3. The student is responsible for following all TLC requirements, such as leaving all books, etc. at the information desk.

  4. The student is responsible for his or her own work; neither the TLC staff nor any other person/s may help a student on a test.

  5. The student is responsible for returning the test to the TLC staff.

TLC responsibilities:
  1. Staff members, who will be proctoring the make-up tests, will always be present in the Center.

  2. Any tests left in the TLC beyond the last day of Finals will be discarded, unless the teacher requests an extension for the student.

  3. Make-up exams will not be given after the final week of classes.

  4. As long as time is left for the student to start and finish the test, the TLC will administer a test any time during normal TLC operating hours, which are:

    Monday - Thursday 7:45 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
    Friday  7:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

  5. Hours may vary for spring, fall, and summer.  In addition, the TLC observes all OCTC holidays.
