HRT 130   LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE             

3 CREDITS

DESCRIPTION:

Introduces basic techniques in landscape maintenance including pruning and planting techniques, safe working practices in the landscape and pest management..  Lecture:  3 hours; Laboratory:  0 hours

. Experiences in the calculation of materials needed and associated cost are included. A plant material list with an estimate of cost is developed. 

 Prerequisite(s): None

COMPETENCIES:

1.  identify types of pruning equipment and learn to use safety;

2.  prune deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees;

3.   obtain landscape soil samples and interpret results;

4.  identify 16 essential elements and their deficiency symptoms;

5.  determine and calculate nutritional needs of plants;

6.   prepare soil for a flower or shrub bed;

7.  calculate materials needed for fencing, cross ties, sod mulch and patio blocks;

8.  plant, water, mulch, and stake, if necessary, a tree or shrub;

9identify and control pests in the landscape; and

10.  identify business management practices.
