Barry Stephens was the winner of a $20 Barnes & Noble gift certificate when he accurately identified 19 out of 24 coworkers in the Library’s fall “Name the Baby” photo contest. Way to go Barry! This contest was a lot of fun and helped us get to know each other a little better. A big thank you goes out to all who submitted photos. The following people won gift certificates as well when they submitted the winning names for the library’s “Name the Scarecrow” contest held this past October. On the main campus, Mary Bruner won for the name Tatty Bobble Fodder Shock and on the downtown campus Gail Smith won for the name Hayward Sunflower. The scarecrows were glad to finally have names and we thank everyone for their creative submissions. |

(Guest writer: Ann Bennett) Well, I was able to read four books last semester and did manage to refresh the thinking parts of my brain. Right before and during the holidays, my focus shifted entirely to family, spirituality, and charity. So, it is once again time to pick up a thought-provoking book, something I can learn from. I am very fortunate to work in an academic library where many “thinking” books pass through my hands. The only problem I have is deciding which to read next. Perhaps something that is timely, such as Blog of war: front-line dispatches from soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan by Matthew Currier Burden. Wait! I do have one other problem. How do I go about inspiring others (meaning YOU) to take the time to read and refresh/expand the mind? Samuel Butler (1835-1902) once said, “Books are like imprisoned souls till someone takes them down from a shelf and frees them.” I say that the reverse is true as well. Books are the keys to freeing our minds and souls from life’s many prisons. By example and suggestions, I have introduced my son to the joy and need of reading, whatever the medium may be (book, comic, magazine). Perhaps I can do the same for you? All you have to do is ask and we librarians will be more than happy to assist you in finding the book that sets you free and helps you to speak wisely. |

Cool Stuff at your Library: |

This semester the library will be presenting a photo display of OCTC employees’ pets. What better way for coworkers to get to know each other a little better by sharing an important part of their lives—their pet(s)! Watch for an email that will have all the details and be prepared to submit your own pet photo! Art instructor Monty Helm prepared a “Children of Katrina” art exhibit by artist Billy Hedel which displayed on the walls of the library’s skylight area as well as in the Chris Dayman Art Gallery. Hopefully you got a chance to stop by before Feb. 2nd and viewed this exceptionally stirring presentation. The OCTC Library and the Director of Cultural Diversity, Lorna Hollowell, will be sponsoring a coffee-house event this February to celebrate Black History Month. Students are encouraged to volunteer as readers. |

A hearty welcome to our new Library Director - The library staff is very proud and pleased to welcome Donna Abell as the new Director of Library Services. Donna has been with the OCTC library since October 1991, starting out as a Library Technician. Over the years she steadily advanced to Library Specialist and most recently to the Public Services Librarian position. Donna definitely has experience in understanding where your library needs have been and a clear vision of how our focus should evolve to meet your future library requirements. New research database unveiled - In order to continue meeting the research needs of their patrons, the KCTCS libraries have recently added InfoTrac’s new Academic OneFile to their list of database offerings. By approximately doubling the number of InfoTrac full-text journals and magazines, the library staff is hoping that patrons will be able to fully utilize this new database for all of their research needs and offers assistance to anyone wanting to learn how best to take advantage of this wonderful resource. |
