“I should have been a librarian” states self-professed library lover Dr. Paula Gastenveld as she tells us a little bit of her history with libraries ever since the 6th grade. Historical fiction is her favorite genre so she never misses an opportunity to read books by Philippa Gregory, James Alexander Thom, and Tracy Chevalier. Regarding the question of increasing library usage, Dr. Gastenveld suggests an increase in faculty given library assignments, centralizing shelving locations of special collections such as Audio CDs, and most importantly, simply asking the students what they want in their library. When asked about OCTC library’s future, Dr. Gastenveld sees the need for a college library that has an inviting atmosphere, is learning centered with up-to-date technology, and can be a gathering place for students, faculty, and staff. To this end, changes have already begun with the replacement of the carpeting and tile, installment of the wireless networks, and soon the new furniture will arrive. |

A memorial service for Gary Wagner, a 15 year veteran of OCTC, is being planned for this October and all are invited to attend. Those who would like to participate in some way please call Donna Abell at 64575. This semester the library will be hosting a “Name the Bat” contest. Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to stop by the Downtown or Main Campus Libraries after October 1st to view the creatures and submit their entry. Two winning names will be chosen and prizes will be given to their creators. Entries must be received by 8pm on 10/29/07. The Common Reading Committee is hosting a luncheon in the library with “Buffalo Dance” author Frank Walker. The event is scheduled to take place before he speaks to the campus community in Blandford Hall on November 7th. All faculty and staff are invited to attend. Don’t forget to stop by the Chris Dayman Art Gallery which will have three different displays this semester. The first features Winter Drawings by OCTC instructor, Monty Helm. Next will be the Annual Student Halloween exhibit. Last but not least, will be the End of the Semester Student Show. Great art for all to see! |

It is with sad hearts that we announce the cessation of ”Gary’s Corner” due to the untimely death of our friend and coworker Gary Wagner (1957-2007). |

Welcome new Library staff members - The library staff is pleased to announce that John Lutzel has taken on a new role as Public Services Librarian. John has been with the OCTC library since September 2005, starting out as a Library Specialist. Having earned several degrees himself, John knows what students expect and need from their college library and he is preparing to meet those needs. More familiar faces you may now see here in the library are Lora Waters and Tonya Johnson. Lora from OCTV has taken over the Print Shop and A/V duties and is already proving to be quite an asset to our team. Until Connie returns from her CIS instructor service, Tonya is on loan to us from Title III to be our acquisitions library specialist and due to her previous library experience she is also doing a great job for us. We are lucky and very grateful to have these two very capable women working with us. |
