LOCAL ECOLOGY Organizations & Programs
This is a clearinghouse of many of the environmental groups working in Kentucky
Western Kentucky Raptor Center (WKRC), a non-profit organization, is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey through public education of their role in our environment, rehabilitation of injured and orphaned raptors, reconditioning and release using falcontry techniques
The Pennyrile Group of the Sierra Club meets on the third Thursday of the month at Audubon Area Community Services on West Second Street in Owensboro (enter the parking lot in rear via 3rd St.). We usually have an outside speaker or film on an environmental topic. Club members are focused on protecting against air and water pollution and in reducing green-house emissions. Look for notices in the clubs section of the Sunday Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer.
Audubon's mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity. The chapter meets monthly from September through June
Of particular interest to members was the recent addition of the Bert and Millie Powell collection of bird-related materials. Seven hundred and eighty-three books and other bird-related items are included in the collection, with 116 items connected to other materials.

Founded in 1995, Bluegrass Conservancy is a private, nonprofit regional land trust committed to the preservation and conservation of the unique rural and cultural resources of the Bluegrass Region. Our mission is to promote the conservation of Bluegrass farmland. We currently hold 24 conservation easements protecting approximately 3,980 acres
The Kentucky Native Plant Society was founded in 1986 for everyone interested in the native plants and wildflowers of Kentucky. Plants Are essential to both the well-being of our Commonwealth's natural ecosystems and our enjoyment of its unique environment. With members in Kentucky and neighboring states, the Kentucky Native Plant Society is a leader in promoting education about, appreciation for, and conservation of our native flora.
The mission of the Kentucky Waterways Alliance is to protect and restore Kentucky's waterways and their watersheds by building effective alliances for their stewardship. KWA is dedicated to strengthening community and governmental stewardship for the restoration and preservation of Kentucky's water resources.
