Below is general information regarding the Introduction to Sociology Online course I teach at OCTC. The information below is meant to be general, and will be modified and elaborated upon in the form of the course syllabus distributed early in the semester. SOC101 Important considerations for taking this class:
Course credit hours This is a three (3) credit hour course.
Course prerequisites There are no official course prerequisites.
Technology/media component This course is classified as an “online” course. This means that we will be using the world wide web, specifically Blackboard, your student email, and the Internet. This entire class will be delivered online, and the student must feel comfortable with using the aforementioned items related to computer literacy. All coursework will be conducted through the computer and the internet, including quizzes and feedback.
Course Description Introduction to Sociology is an introduction to the concepts and methods of sociology. Investigation of socialization, group processes, social institutions, and social change.
Course Objectives Using discussion, lecture, films, and other media, the student will have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the phenomena known as society. In addition, it is a course objective to convert a common sense understanding of society into one based upon a sociological perspective.
Attendance policy Face-to-face attendance in the class will not be required. However, your attention to the course requirements and activities are paramount in order for you to succeed in this class. Typically, if students fall behind in an online course there tends to be a snowball effect, pushing them further and further behind to the point where material is missed, skipped, and not completed. Therefore, staying current with this class is of the utmost importance.
