Circulation

Vessels

Vessel: general term for either arteries or veins

I). Description

Arteries > Arteriole Capillaries > Venules > Veins

  • Arteries carry blood away from the heart
  • Veins carry blood to the heart

A.  . Arterial System

1). Elastic (Conducting) Arteries (2.5 cm à 1.0 cm)

 aorta and the major branches.

2). Muscular (Distributing) Arteries (1cm à 3mm)

3). Arterioles (.33mm à 10: m)

B). Capillaries

Contractile cells that wrap about precapillary arterioles to control capillary blood flow

C). Venous System

A). Venules

B). Veins

  •  blood pressure low
  • venous valves that prevent backflow

II.  Vessel structure

Vesssel Structure

1). Tunica interna:

Endothelium l continuation of the endocardium

2). Tunica media

smooth muscle and elastin.

3). Tunica externa

Collagen fibers

4). Vasa Vasorum:

Small blood vessels
